Air Lubrication System compressors are becoming increasingly relevant in shipping. By optimizing air flow and reducing hull friction, ALS systems can reduce fuel consumption and emissions – a win for both the environment and the bottom line.
That's according to Alexander Larsen, Product Manager Oilfree Compressors at TMC Compressors.
– TMC Compressors supplies the compressors that power these systems, helping shipowners achieve more efficient and sustainable operations. The larger the vessels, the greater the effect of an Air Lubrication System. That makes the technology particularly interesting in the years to come, he says.
With more than 14 years of experience in the compressor industry, including the last two and a half at TMC Compressors, Larsen has seen a significant shift in his work. From land-based industry, he has moved into the maritime market - a world characterized by different requirements, cultures, and customer expectations.
– The international environment is incredibly exciting. You must understand different ways of working, while delivering products that are technically precise and cost-effective. In the maritime sector, it's simply about always delivering tailor-made solutions for the application, Larsen explains.
It's about finding the right balance between advanced technology, cost, and real-world applicability. Each project requires a tailor-made approach, adapted to vessel type and the customer's operational needs. By understanding these factors early, we ensure that every solution we deliver is technically correct and cost-effective, Larsen says.
TMC has built a strong reputation in a market characterized by fierce competition and price pressure.
– They know that when they buy from TMC, they get quality. We never compromise. It's a reputation we've built over many years.
Remote monitoring is becoming an increasingly important part of how TMC supports vessels in daily operations. The ability to follow compressor performance in real time gives crews better insight, faster troubleshooting, and more predictable service planning.
As data traffic becomes cheaper and more stable, this will only grow in relevance. Remote monitoring makes it possible to optimize operations, document savings, and demonstrate the real value of an ALS system on board, Larsen concludes.
